1 dead after Maine woman plows car into Little League baseball field

June 4 (UPI) — A Maine woman drove her car onto a Little League baseball field during the middle of a game on Saturday and killed one person, police said.

Police in Sanford, Maine, said Carol Sharrow, 51, drove her vehicle through the main gate of Goodall Park and onto the field as kids were playing a Little League game.

“Bystanders and ballplayers scattered to avoid the vehicle as it drove erratically on the ballfield,” Sanford police said in a statement. “The vehicle struck a closed gate and then sped toward the open main gate. The vehicle struck a pedestrian who was near the main gate, and then sped from the scene.”

The victim was 68-year-old Douglas Parkhurst, who died from his injuries en route to the hospital.

Sharrow was arrested and charged with manslaughter.

Between 200 and 300 people were in the stands during the time of the incident, according to WGME-TV.

No other injuries were reported.

The case remains under investigation.
