April 23 (UPI) — North Korea offered the United States and its supercarrier, the USS Carl Vinson, a thinly veiled threat in an op-ed published in state-sponsored newspaper Rodong Sinmun.
“Our revolutionary forces are combat-ready to sink a U.S. nuclear-powered aircraft carrier with a single strike,” editorialists wrote in the paper, a mouthpiece for North Korea’s ruling Workers’ Party.
On Sunday, the USS Carl Vinson began military drills in the Philippines Sea with a pair of Japanese destroyers.
Last week, the Pentagon announced the U.S. warship would remain deployed in the region for at least another 30 days “to provide a persistent presence in the waters off the Korean Peninsula.”
North Korea warned Australia it could strike the continent with nuclear weapons if Australia remained an ally of the United States.
Also on Sunday, several news outlets reported a Korean-American had been arrested in Pyongyang International Airport.
