Jan. 2 (UPI) — At least 25 people died Tuesday when a bus plunged 330 feet off a cliff on a beach in Peru north of the capital, local officials said.
The bus was carrying 57 passengers when it crashed along a stretch of road called Curva del Diablo, meaning The Devil’s Bend in English, on the Pan-American Highway. The driver and one crew member also were on board.
”At least 25 people are dead and around five are injured among those found,” Dino Escudero, chief of highway police, told Channel N, as translated by Sputnik. “The police and firefighters are working to rescue the victims of the crash, but we believe the death toll could rise.”
The BBC reported the bus may have collided with a trailer attached to another vehicle before it plummeted. Escudero said authorities had launched an investigation.
The bus departed Tuesday morning from Huacho and was en route to Lima.
