Puerto Rico to Begin Rationing Water Amid Drought
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, May 12 (UPI) — Parts of Puerto Rico’s capital of San Juan and surrounding towns will undergo water rationing starting Wednesday due to drought conditions.
The drought has caused river and reservoir levels to drop dramatically. The system of water rationing will alternate water use between two designated sections, called “zone A” and “zone B.”
The cities of San Juan, Carolina and Trujillo Alto will all be affected.
Starting Wednesday, water will be shut off in zone A for a period of 24 hours. On Thursday zone B, which includes the town of Canóvanas, will have its water cut off.
The zones will alternate water rationing in 24 hour periods for an indefinite amount of time.
Puerto Rico’s Aqueduct and Sewer Authority announced it may expand water rationing to other locations if the drought continues.
Water collection centers have been established at the Hiram Bithorn baseball stadium in San Juan, where residents can collect water between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m.
The last time Puerto Rico rationed water was from May to September 1994.
