California Surfers Set World Record When 66 Ride One Board
HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif., June 22 (UPI) — An ambitious group of California surfers have set the world record for most people riding one surfboard.
Sixty-six people squeezed onto a custom-built 42-foot-long surfboard Saturday in Huntington Beach, Calif., where they rode a wave together for 12 seconds.
The previous record was set in Queensland, Australia, where 47 surfers road a 39-foot board for 10 seconds.
Guinness World Records adjudicator Michael Empric, who was on hand to witness the event, described the record as “really great.”
“To see it done on such an epic scale is really exciting,” Empric surfing-667730-record-huntington.html?page=2″ target=”_blank”>told the Orange County Register.
About 5,000 people stood on the beach to watch the event, which was part of Huntington’s 100 years of surfing celebration.
“It was crowded, it was scary, but we had to focus,” said surfer Tim Stamps. “We were all happy, everyone was screaming and yelling. It was a good time.”
