SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, May 26, 2026 (Gephardt Daily) — Hogle Zoo on Tuesday announced the death 11 days ago of Kenney, its 4-year-old California sea lion.

The Zoo did not explain the delay in sharing the news, but did say the death came after a sudden, acute illness.

Kenney was new to the Zoo. Hogle Zoo announced his arrival from Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium on April 23.

“On Sunday, May 10, Kenney’s care team noticed an abrupt change in Kenney’s behavior as he began experiencing sudden lethargy, appetite loss, and gastrointestinal issues,” Hogle Zoo’s statement says.

“Within a few days, his condition became severe very quickly, and Hogle Zoo placed him under advanced veterinary care.”

Zoo teams consulted specialists, collected diagnostic samples, and performed blood work and imaging to learn more about the cause of his acute illness and guide his treatment plan, the statement says.

“Despite quick and rigorous medical intervention over multiple days, Kenney developed acute liver failure and passed away.”

Kenney died on May 15.

“Kenney got sick very quickly and was a tough medical challenge,” said Dr. Erika Crook, DVM and Director of Animal Health for Hogle Zoo.

“Throughout the week, we used a wide range of treatments and remained in constant contact with specialists as we learned what was happening with Kenney, brainstorming next steps and treating his symptoms.”

Hogle Zoo conducted a full-body CT scan and necropsy to understand as much as possible and continue to work closely with health partners to advance pinniped diagnostic knowledge.

“At this time, the other Rocky Shores residents Maverick, Banana, Mira, and Nika are not experiencing similar symptoms, but are still being monitored,” the news release says.
