WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah, July 8, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — A 67-year-old man is in critical condition after being hit by a car in West Valley City Monday afternoon.

West Valley City Police Lt. Amy Mauer told Gephardt Daily the incident occurred in the area of Valley Crest Elementary School, which is at 5240 W. 3100 South, just after 2 p.m.

Mauer said the man, who was walking a dog, was in a crosswalk walking from the south side of 3100 South to the north side. Eastbound traffic in the two lane road stopped for the man, but the driver coming westbound struck the man.

The man was transported to an area hospital in critical condition.

Officials said the 26-year-old driver of an older Ford Mustang who hit the victim did stay on scene and is cooperating with police.

The exact cause of the crash is under investigation. It’s not clear if there were contributing factors such as impairment, distraction or speed.

The dog was not injured, but ran from the scene. The dog was subsequently located.

Gephardt Daily will have more on this developing story as information is made available.
