SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Feb. 15, 2026 (Gephardt Daily) — The Salt Lake City Police Department has identified the driver killed in an ejection and rollover Sunday morning.
The man who died was 62-year-old Robert Hill, a sergeant with the Utah Department of Corrections.
“Detectives believe he was ejected from the car and died before first responders arrived,” an SLCPD statement says.
Sgt. Blue, SLCPD, told Gephardt Daily earlier that a call came to dispatch at about 7:26.
“A citizen had noticed a vehicle crash at about 8000 West and 700 North,” Blue said. The driver had been southbound on 8000 West and left the roadway for an unknown reason.
“Unfortunately, the driver and sole occupant was ejected from the vehicle and declared deceased on the scene.”
The update that provided Hill’s name, issued at about noon, said detectives with the Collision Analysis & Reconstruction Team continue to investigate the circumstances and cause of the crash.
Dept. of Corrections
The Utah Department of Corrections issued the following statement on Hill’s death:
“Sgt. Hill has worked with the Department since 1996, serving in various roles, including the maximum security unit at the Draper facility,” it says.
Jared Garcia, Executive Director of the Utah Department of Corrections, shared thoughts:
“The passing of Sgt. Hill is a profound loss for our department and for our entire law enforcement community,” Garcia said.
“We extend our deepest sympathies to Robert’s loved ones and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time.”
UDC is offering assistance to facility staff members as they cope with the news, the statement says.
