SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Aug. 24, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — Salt Lake City Police officers and the Metro Gang Unit are investigating a shoot-out between two groups of people late Friday night.

Lt. C. Valencia, with the Salt Lake City Police Department, said multiple calls were received reporting shots fired in the area of 880 Ensign Vista Drive.

When officers arrived, they found 13 to 14 shell casings from a 9 mm handgun at two locations. Witnesses told police that a small, silver SUV sped westbound from Ensign Vista, while another group ran away from the scene on foot.

A short time later, a woman called the police to report that her silver SUV had bullet holes in it. The woman is the vehicle’s registered owner, but police determined that she hadn’t been driving it Friday night. They proceeded to interview the people who had been using the SUV.

Valencia said a vehicle at Ensign Vista was found to have a handgun in the trunk, so police were in the process of obtaining a search warrant for the vehicle.

“No one was injured, that we know of,” Valencia said.

He said it appears that there was a verbal altercation before bullets started flying, with both groups — those in the SUV and those on foot — shooting at each other.

Officials believe the incident was gang-related. Valencia said the suspects are not cooperating.

Gephardt Daily will update this story as more information becomes available.
