SALT LAKE CITY, May 22, 2026 (Gephardt Daily) — An armed man was shot and killed in a confrontation with Salt Lake City Police officers Friday evening.

According to Salt Lake City Lt. Michael Ruff, officers responded about 6:37 p.m. to reports of a person with a firearm near 150 West Lucy Avenue.

“A caller told SLC911 a man was suicidal and brandished a weapon to a neighbor. The caller told dispatch the man now had a handgun in his waistband.”

“Our officers arrived within three minutes of that call going out. Once they arrived, they took a position around the address,” Ruff said.

At 6:42 p.m. SLC911 advised officers the man had gone inside the house and closed the door. Officers then requested additional resources and advised dispatch they were taking cover behind a truck on the street.

Shortly after officers arrived on scene, the individual came out of a residence with a weapon in hand. Four officers shot at the man. He was struck and died at the scene, police said.

In keeping with Officer-Involved Critical Incident Protocol, outside investigators were called in to collect evidence and conduct interviews. Ruff said Protocol team three, led by West Valley City Police, “will look into all the circumstances around this and around this.”

All four officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, as per SLCPD policy.

The man is not being identified pending notification of family, according to Ruff.

Gephardt Daily will provide additional information when details are confirmed.
