OGDEN, Utah, June 12, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — Weber State University has confirmed the reason for the multi-hour Code Purple alert Tuesday.

A staff member in the parking lot of the Hurst Center was having a severe emotional crisis.

People in the Hurst Center were put on lockdown, and residents at some Wildcat Village buildings were advised to move to other buildings.

“The Mobile Crisis Outreach Team, SWAT and Weber State Police Department responded to an incident today involving one individual on our Ogden campus,” said WSU spokesman Bryan Magaña.

“After four hours of attempted intervention, that individual was taken to a local area hospital with a self-inflicted injury and later pronounced dead.”

WSU will provide counselors from 11 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Lindquist Hall.

Magaña called the loss “devastating,” and offered condolences to the staff member’s family members, friends and all those who knew the deceased.
