FILLMORE, UTAH – August 19, 2015 (Gephardt Daily) – A Washington State man was killed after being hit by a semi while stalled in the travel lanes on I-15.
According to Utah Highway Patrol, Derek J. White, 23, of Sammamish, Washington, was driving traveling north on I-15 in a Honda Civic near Fillmore, shortly after midnight, when he came upon a construction zone where the right lane was closed and traffic is restricted to the left.
White, possibly unsuspecting of the lane changes, drifted to the left edge of the roadway and then over corrected to the right then back to the left, causing the car to rotate off the roadway towards the median. White then steered sharply to the right again in an attempt to over correct, causing the car to rotate clockwise towards the northbound travel lane and eventually ending up stalled backwards and sideways in the left hand travel lane.
A semi, also going north on I-15, did not realize White’s car was disabled in the travel lane and struck the car in the driver’s side forcing both vehicles off the road and through the right of way fence coming to a stop on the frontage road.
Both vehicles then caught fire. White was pinned inside his vehicle and died at the scene of the accident.
The investigation is ongoing, next of kin have been notified.
