NEW YORK- October 7, 2015 — (UPI) — Nicki Minaj is not sorry for publicly confronting fellow singer Miley Cyrus over previous comments dubbing the rapper “not very polite.”
The hip-hop artist explained in length her fighting words uttered at this year’s Video Music Awards in an interview with the New York Times published Wednesday.
Critiquing Cyrus through the newspaper, Minaj — born as Onika Tanya Maraj — said the recent VMA host must have “some big balls,” for being upset about her “speaking on something that affects black women.”
“You’re in videos with black men, and you’re bringing out black women on your stages, but you don’t want to know how black women feel about something that’s so important? Come on, you can’t want the good without the bad,” Minaj continued. “If you want to enjoy our culture and our lifestyle, bond with us, dance with us, have fun with us, twerk with us, rap with us, then you should also want to know what affects us, what is bothering us, what we feel is unfair to us. You shouldn’t not want to know that.”
Minaj’s new comments come after a three-chapter feud between her and Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus. The feud took a toll for the worst during the August awards show when the “Trini Dem Girls” rapper sharply challenged the latter star on stage after receiving the accolade for Best Hip-Hop Video.
“This [expletive] that had a lot to say about me the other day in the press,” Minaj said, VMA moonman in hand. “Miley, what’s good?”
The saga began before the actual event, when Minaj’s sultry ‘Anaconda’ video was omitted from being nominated in the Best Music Video category.
The disappointed rapper tweeted a series of messages claiming the industry celebrates slim women and rewards them accordingly. “If I was a different ‘kind’ of artist, ‘Anaconda’ would be nominated,” she wrote at the time. “Black women influence pop culture so much but are rarely rewarded for it.”
Swift, who was nominated for the top VMA award and ultimately won, replied to the tweet as if she was being personally attacked. “I’ve done nothing but love & support you,” Swift wrote at the time. “It’s unlike you to pit women against each other. Maybe one of the men took your slot.”
After facing a tidal wave of social media backlash, Swift called her colleague and apologized for misunderstanding the greater issue her contemporary was speaking of. The two female entertainment powerhouses ultimately performed together at the VMA’s to bury any leftover animosity.
Before stepping onto the VMA stage as host, Cyrus injected herself into the feud telling the Times she felt Minaj’s comments to Swift were angry and lacked an “open heart,” thus prompting the eclectic star to disregard Minaj’s point of view. “Nicki Minaj is not too kind,” Cyrus said.
