SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Dec. 6, 2015 (Gephardt Daily) — Longtime rivals the Utes and the Cougars will face off Dec. 19 at the Royal Purple Las Vegas Bowl, it was announced Sunday.
“After being nationally ranked since the second week of the season and finishing as co-champion of the Pac-12 South Division, we are looking forward to our ninth bowl game in the last 11 seasons,” said University of Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham in a news release.
“Las Vegas is a great destination for our fans and the bowl organizers work hard to make it a memorable experience for the players.”
U of U athletic director Chris Hill was pleased.
“This has been our best season as members of the Pac-12 and we are pleased at the opportunity to play one more game,” Hill said.
“Through our past experience, we know that the people involved with the Royal Purple Las Vegas Bowl will provide a wonderful experience for our student-athletes, coaches and fans.”
No statement was immediately released by Bronco Mendenhall, Brigham Young University’s head football coach, who last week announced he had accepted a head coaching job at the University of Virginia.
Mendenhall has coached BYU for 11 years and led the team to 99 wins. A victory at the Las Vegas Bowl would give him an even 100.
U of U red and BYU blue mix it up at the Royal Purple Las Vegas Bowl at 1:30 p.m. Dec. 19. The box office shows that tickets already are sold out, although teams will be given tickets to sell.
