DRAPER, Utah, Aug. 12, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — The Unified Police Department has released the name of the cellmate of James C. Corbett, the Utah State Prison inmate who was murdered Wednesday while in his cell.

The deceased man’s cellmate, and the only suspect in his death, is Timothy P. Maez, 38. The two men were in their cell alone at the time of Corbett’s death.

Maez has been in and out of prison since 1999, according to information from  Utah Department of Corrections. His most recent incarceration began in June 2014.

He is serving time for attempted aggravated kidnapping, retaliation against a judge/Board of Pardons and Parole, and propelling a substance at a correctional officer.

Maez’s history includes convictions for burglary, vehicle burglary, retail theft, theft, attempted robbery, aggravated assault by a prisoner, and absconding.

On Wednesday at about 11:30 p.m., Corbett, 33, was found on the floor of his cell, covered with blood. Officers removed Corbett’s cellmate and administered CPR to Corbett. He was transported to an area hospital, and was pronounced dead an hour later.

Officers have speculated that a ballpoint may have been used as a weapon in Corbett’s assault.

Corbett had been serving a sentence for two counts of attempted sexual abuse of a child. He was scheduled for parole on Sept. 9.
