NEW YORK, Oct. 28 (UPI) — Fans of the new “Star” Wars films have accused Daisy Ridley’s character, Rey, of being too perfect, calling her a “Mary Sue.”
Ridley responded to the criticism and said she found the use of the term Mary Sue confusing.
“I think Rey is incredibly vulnerable, and nothing she’s doing is for the greater good,” Ridley said. “She’s just doing what she thinks is the right thing. And she doesn’t want to do some of it, but she feels compelled to do it. So for me, I was just confused.”
“Everyone was saying that Luke had the same [capabilities],” Ridley said. “The Mary Sue thing in itself is sexist.”
Ridley is reprising her role as Rey for the followup to “Star Wars: The Force Awakens in Star Wars: Episode VIII,” which premieres on Dec. 15, 2017.
