HIAWATHA, Utah, Nov. 3, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — Carbon County Sheriff’s officials have booked a suspect into jail on murder charges after they say he shot his mother and his younger brother on Wednesday evening.

Seth Gordon Peterson, 25, of Ferron, has been booked into the Carbon County Jail on two counts of first-degree felony murder; one count of first-degree attempted felony murder; second-degree felony theft of a motor vehicle; and third-degree felony failure to stop at the command of an officer.

The victims are Susan Peterson, 45, and James Peterson, 23.

Carbon County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement on Facebook the incident occurred at approximately 6 p.m. just outside Hiawatha, a ghost town located at the base of Gentry Mountain, some 12 miles southwest of Price.

“A call came into Price dispatch that a person had been shot,” said a statement released Wednesday night on the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page.

“Deputies from the CCSO were first on scene. As they arrived they observed a suspect leaving in a vehicle that was described in the initial call to dispatch. Deputies pursued in a chase and apprehended one male, while two other deputies made their way to the scene.”

In the news release about Seth Peterson being charged, the CCSO said no motive has been established in the case, and bail has not yet been determined.

At the request of Susan’s husband, Shane Peterson, the family’s Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints bishop issued the following statement from the family Thursday afternoon: On Wednesday, November 2, 2016, Susan Peterson and her 23-year-old son James were shot and killed near Hiawatha, Utah.
Susan was a loving mother of 15 children, ages 28 to three. She was very active in the community and in her church. Susan was very service-oriented and was always taking care of other people. She was a very intelligent person, always thirsting for knowledge in bettering herself and her family. Her family was her whole life and she supported them in all they did.  Susan always thought of others before herself. Her husband states that she would often go without new clothing and other necessities in order to make sure her children had what they needed. She never wanted for herself.
James was kind-hearted and would give you the shirt off his back. He was very personable, kind, respectful and thoughtful of others.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to assist the family.
