LAYTON, Utah, Nov. 26, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — The Layton Police Department has released the name of a 15-year-old boy killed Friday night in a two-car collision.
The victim is Joshua Nielson, a sophomore at Northridge High School. He was riding in a car driven by another 15-year-old boy who had a learner’s permit, but who had taken his family car without permission.
The accident occurred at about 7:20 p.m. at the intersection of Main Street and Reid Avenue, in Layton. The vehicle was traveling north on Main Street, and the driver made a left turn to get onto Reid Avenue, but failed to yield to a car traveling southbound on Main Street.
The car with the teenagers was struck on the passenger side, according to reports. Joshua was trapped in the vehicle, but was extricated by emergency responders. The victim died while being taken to a nearby hospital.
No other serious injuries were reported, Layton Police officials confirmed. Everyone involved was wearing a seatbelt.
The LPD shared the following on its Facebook page:
“Joshua is a 10th grader at Northridge High School who has a smile that can light up a room in 3 seconds flat,” the post said of the deceased teen.
“We wish to express our sorrow for all parties involved in this tragic incident. Joshua’s family would like us to express their appreciation for privacy while they mourn the loss of their child.”
