Update: Adult and juvenile in custody after West Valley City Shopko parking lot shooting

West Valley City Police said in a news release that Martin Daniel Diaz, 25, has been booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for one count of first-degree felony murder, two counts of second-degree felony attempted murder and one count of first-degree felony discharge of a firearm with injury, in connection with a fatal shooting Saturday, Dec. 24, in West Valley City.

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah, Dec. 24, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — An adult and a juvenile are in custody after an early morning shooting in West Valley City on Christmas Eve.

A news release from West Valley City Police Department Sunday morning said Martin Daniel Diaz, 25, has been booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for one count of first-degree felony murder, two counts of second-degree felony attempted murder and one count of first-degree felony discharge of a firearm with injury.

A 17-year-old juvenile male has been booked into detention.

Gary Hart, 34 and from West Valley City, was found dead at the scene. The names of two other men injured have not been released.

West Valley City Police Lt. Amy Maurer said police received a call at 4:04 a.m. Saturday reporting gunshots in the area of 4800 West and 3500 South.

Upon arrival, police found a group of people in the Shopko parking lot. Hart was dead and the second man was rushed to an area hospital in critical condition, but has since been upgraded to serious. A third man who was shot had only a minor injury.

Preliminary information indicates that some of the people involved in the incident had been attending a party nearby, according to a statement released Saturday afternoon by the West Valley City Police Department.

Those people and others met in the parking lot of the Shopko store and an altercation ensued. The three men were shot during that altercation.

West Valley City Police investigators were able to quickly identify the two suspects in the case. Multiple officers were called out to assist in locating them, and they were taken into custody without incident.
