HOLLADAY, Utah, March 6, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — One person was taken into custody Monday afternoon after police responded to a shots-fired call that turned out to be a false alarm.
Granite School District tweeted at 1:30 p.m. Monday that Cottonwood Elementary, at 5205 S. Holladay Blvd. (2500 East), and Oakwood Elementary, at 5815 S. Highland Drive (2000 East) were put on shelter-in-place status as police responded to a suspected shooting in the neighborhood of 2000 E. Cotton Willow Lane (5000 South).
The district added there was no direct threat to students, and the shelter-in-place was precautionary to ensure student safety.
Spring Lane Elementary at 5315 S. 1700 East and Bonneville Junior High at 5330 S. 1650 East were then placed on shelter-in-place as well due to the same incident.
At 1:45 p.m., the district tweeted that law enforcement had taken a suspect into custody, and protocols at all locations have been lifted.
No shots were fired, and initial reports indicate the suspect may have had a mental health issue.
Law enforcement lifted the shelter-in-place protocol moments after Bonneville received direction, so school officials did not have time to implement it.
School then proceeded as normal, the school district tweeted.
Shelter-in-place means selecting a small, interior room, with no or few windows and taking refuge there. It does not mean sealing off your entire school.
