May 13 (UPI) — President Donald Trump said Saturday a “fast decision” will be made on a replacement for fired FBI Director James Comey.
Trump said a decision on Comey’s replacement could be made as early as next week before he is scheduled to leave on May 19 for his first foreign trip as president.
“Even that is possible,” he said before flying to Virginia to deliver Liberty University’s commencement address.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein are scheduled to interview four candidates on Saturday including Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe, Republican Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, former Justice Department Criminal Division Chief Alice Fisher and New York state judge and former U.S. Attorney in Manhattan Michael Garcia.
“I think the process is going to go quickly,” Trump said. “Almost all of them are very well known. They’ve been vetted over their lifetime, essentially. But very well known, highly respected, really talented people. And that’s what we want for the FBI.”
Trump fired Comey on Tuesday on recommendations from the top two officials in the U.S. Department of Justice, amid criticism from Democrats who questioned the timing of the move.
