SUMMIT COUNTY, Utah, Aug. 19, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — Three people were severely injured Saturday morning in a collision on Interstate 80.
According to a news release from Utah Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at about 11:45 a.m. near milepost 181. A passenger car was traveling in the left lane, and a silver semi pulling a tanker trailer was in the right lane parallel to the car.
As both vehicles approached the Port of Entry, a second semi, slightly ahead of the silver semi, slowed down to enter the Port. The silver semi moved into the left lane and failed to yield to the passenger car already in that lane, the release states.
To avoid a collision, the passenger car’s driver veered onto the left shoulder but then overcorrected to the right and hit the front of the silver semi. The impact caused the car to strike the front of the red semi.
The car then spun off the right side of the road, down an embankment and rolled.
Three of the four occupants in the car — a 20-year-old woman driver, a 21-year-old man, and a 14-year-old girl were not wearing seat belts. The man and the girl were ejected from the vehicle and were critically injured. The man was transported by medical helicopter to University of Utah Hospital and the girl was flown to Primary Children’s Hospital.
The driver was not ejected, but had significant injuries and was transported by ambulance to Park City Medical Center. The staff there determined she should be flown to Intermountain Medical Center by helicopter.
Also in the car was a 2-month-old infant who was properly restrained in a car seat. The infant was completely unharmed, the release states.
Westbound I-80 was closed for approximately 90 minutes for crash investigation and medical helicopter transport.
