EAGLE MOUNTAIN, Utah, Jan. 15, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A 19-year-old woman was airlifted to University of Utah Hospital in Salt Lake City after she was accidentally shot at home late Sunday night.

Sgt. Spencer Cannon, Utah County Sheriff’s Office spokesman, told Gephardt Daily the young woman lives in the Eagle Mountain home with friends.

She was in a bedroom with the door closed, Cannon said, when someone in a room down the hall picked up a rifle that was on a bed.

Cannon said a round was jammed in the chamber, and when the rifle was picked up, the round apparently was dislodged and the firing mechanism engaged.

The bullet went down the hall and through the door of the room the woman was in, striking her in the back and exiting through her chest, Cannon said.

It then went through a curtain, a window and a window well, ending up outside.

Cannon said the woman is in stable condition in the ICU at University Hospital, and the latest report “sounded positive.”

He said although the incident “was not very good firearm safety,” after investigating, officials determined that it was an unfortunate accident and “there was no ill intent …  certainly no criminal intent.”

No charges are being filed and no arrest is being made at this time, he said.
