WASATCH COUNTY, Utah, Jan. 15, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — One person died Monday night as a result of a crash on U.S. Route 189. Officials initially reported that four vehicles had been involved, but later said there were two — a Chevy Trailblazer and a Toyota Camry.
Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Jacob Cox told Gephardt Daily the accident occurred near Mile Marker 23 near Deer Creek Reservoir at 5:15 p.m., closing Route 189 in both directions.
In a subsequent news release, Cox said troopers responded to a two-car crash on Route 189 at Mile Marker 23, near Dock of the Bay in Deer Creek Reservoir.
The road in that area has one northbound and one southbound lane.
According to the news release, preliminary evidence shows that the northbound Trailblazer crossed into the southbound lane, where the southbound Camry swerved to the right in an attempt to avoid a collision.
The vehicles did collide nearly head on, though, in the area of the southbound lane’s right fog line (the white line separating the travel lane from the shoulder area), the release states.
The driver of the Camry died at the scene.
The Trailblazer’s driver was transported to an area hospital with critical injuries.
Troopers are working to notify family members and to determine why the SUV crossed into oncoming traffic.
