IRON COUNTY, Utah, Jan. 20, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A man died Saturday morning when the pickup truck he was driving was hit by a train near Beryl in southern Utah.
According to a news release from Lt. Del Schlosser, Iron County Sheriff’s Office, a call came in to dispatchers at about 8:30 a.m., reporting the crash in the area of 8400 North and 5600 West.
It took authorities about an hour to reach the man because of the harsh weather conditions and the location of the crash.
When medical crews arrived, they determined that the 50-year-old man was not breathing. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The Beryl Fire Department was called to extricate the man from the vehicle.
The train didn’t derail and none of its cargo was spilled, the release states.
According to the sheriff’s office, Union Pacific officials said a train had been through that area at about 4:30 a.m., and the vehicle wasn’t seen at that time.
The investigation is still underway, and the sheriff’s office said it’s possible that the man in the truck had been using alcohol or drugs. They are working to determine just how the incident happened and if the truck was stuck on the tracks at the time of the crash.
The name of the truck’s driver has not been released pending notification of family members.
