SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, March 15, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A man was transported to the hospital after being shot in the face Thursday night, and police were trying to sort out conflicting stories as to what actually happened.
Lt. Dave Cracroft, of the Salt Lake City Police Department, told Gephardt Daily police received a call at about 9:50 p.m. of a shooting at 1794 W. Shannon Circle.
“When officers arrived, they found a male in an upstairs apartment that had been shot in the face,” Cracroft said. “Fortunately, it’s not a life-threatening wound.”
Cracroft said the shooter, also male, was located in the downstairs apartment and is cooperating with police. He added that there is another witness as well.
The victim was transported to University Hospital for treatment of his wound, which Cracroft described as “a hole in his cheek.”
Police were working to pin down the details of how the shooting came about.
“The shooter shot from inside the house (to outside), so we don’t know if it’s a defense-of-his-home situation or if there was just an argument and a fight,” Cracroft said.
He said detectives were on their way to the scene and “they’ll be doing proper sit-down interviews, and we’ve got our crime lab here collecting evidence.”
Officers were also canvassing the neighborhood.
“Initially, we thought it might be gang-related, but neither of our participants are showing any gang affiliation,” Cracroft said.
The weapon used was a handgun, which was still in the house shortly after the shooting. Only one shot was fired, Cracroft said.
Police obtained a warrant to go in and retrieve the gun and conduct a search for any other evidence.
“The shooter is at the police station,” Cracroft said.
