SOUTH SALT LAKE, Utah, March 20, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Police have identified a son and his father after a deadly stabbing in a South Salt Lake apartment Monday night.
South Salt Lake Police spokesman Gary Keller told Gephardt Daily the 911 call came in just after 6:30 p.m. from an apartment at 2757 S. 300 East.
According to the probable cause statement, the caller informed dispatch “he had just stabbed his father in the heart.”
Keller said the call was made by a 38-year-old man, later identified as Warren Richard Phelps, at that address.
When officers arrived, they found the man’s 65-year-old father, Richard Phelps, had been stabbed in a bedroom, South Salt Lake Police said in a news release Tuesday morning.
Paramedics attempted to revive the victim, but he remained unresponsive and was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim appeared to have been stabbed more than once, police said.
Keller said the son was taken into custody without incident. He has been booked into Salt Lake County Jail and charged with first-degree felony murder.
It appears that an argument between the father and son, possibly over a television, officials said, led up to the stabbing.
The case will be screened by the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office for formal charges.
Gephardt Daily will have more on this developing story as information becomes available.
