May 17 (UPI) — At least two people were killed Thursday when a school bus crashed into a dump truck on a New Jersey highway, authorities said.

WNBC-TV reported one student and one adult chaperone died.

The bus had 46 children on board from East Brook Middle School in Paramus, N.J., which has about 650 students.

The children were fifth-graders on a field trip with teachers and chaperones at the time of the crash, Holly Tedesco, Paramus Council president and police commissioner told ABC News.

The collision ripped off the bus’ front end and its undercarriage, and caused traffic closures across all lanes on Route 80, as New Jersey State Police investigated the accident.

Several people were admitted to multiple New Jersey hospitals with injuries, officials said.
