SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, May 21, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A 27-year-old man who threatened to harm himself and others in a Salt Lake apartment complex overnight prompted a six-hour SWAT standoff, officials said.
The incident began Sunday evening at approximately 9:30 p.m. when a man made multiple calls to dispatch, making threats to hurt himself and others at the MoDA Bonneville apartments at 260 S. 500 East, according to Salt Lake City Police Department spokesman Det. Keith Horrocks.
Police arrived at the scene and attempted to make contact with the man, but he would not leave his apartment, Horrocks said.
The man then went out onto his balcony and brandished a weapon, though it’s not clear at this time what the weapon was.
Officials made the decision to treat the man as a barricaded subject, and SWAT teams were called to the scene. Residents of the apartment complex were evacuated and police blocked off 500 East between 300 and 400 South.
After a six hour standoff, SWAT fired gas into the apartment and the man was taken into custody peacefully.
He was then taken to an area hospital on an involuntary hold.
The man could be facing charges, officials said, but they have not yet said what those will be.
