TOQUERVILLE, Utah, July 22, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — A woman was killed and an 11-year-old girl was airlifted to an area hospital after a rollover crash at Toquerville Sunday evening.
A news release from the Utah Highway Patrol said a small Chevy pickup truck was traveling eastbound on State Route 17 at approximately 8:50 p.m.
The driver of the pickup was a 17-year-old female with a learner’s permit, the news release said, and there were four other passengers in the truck, one adult and three juveniles.
“Near milepost 4, at Toquerville, the driver failed to negotiate the swooping turn that leads into town,” the news release said. “The driver struck the right concrete barrier, corrected left, then overcorrected right and struck the barrier again.”
This impact rolled the vehicle at least once. The truck landed on its wheels and two of the occupants were ejected, the 11-year-old female and a 31-year-old female. Both were taken to an area hospital by ambulance.
The 31-year-old female succumbed to her injuries and died at the hospital. She has been identified as Patricia Holm, of Colorado City, Arizona.
The 11-year-old is expected to survive and was flown to Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City.
The other occupants of the vehicle had non-life-threatening injuries. The other occupants will not be identified due to their age. They were females ages 10 and 13.
Speed appears to have been a factor in the crash, which is still under investigation.
