SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Oct. 8, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — Two woman who accused former Utah State University Football player Torrey Green of sexual assault filed a complaint Monday against USU for failing to protect them.
Also named in the plaintiffs’ lawsuit are:
- The USU Board of Regents
- The USU Board of Trustees
- USU employee Krystin Deschamps, who was a student conduct coordinator and assessment specialist for USU
- USU employee Jenny Erazo, a coordinator for the university’s sexual assault and anti-violence information
Green, a former USU football player, was convicted of raping five women and sexually assaulting a sixth while he was a student at USU. He was sentenced on March 27 of this year to 26 years to life in the Utah State Prison.
In the complaint, filed Monday, the plaintiffs’s says USU and others named created a dangerous environment that favored predatory males; violated Title IX regulations; and denied the women’s civil rights by discouraging them from sharing some assault-related information.
The complaint says that even prior to Green’s assaults, “a dangerous environment existed at Utah State University where sexual assaults were known about and tolerated by the University and the individual defendants.”
The complaint says USU “failed to investigate Green, implement appropriate remedial action or remove Green from campus to ensure the safety of its students.”
One woman suffered paralyzing anxiety as a result of the assault, she said, and her academic career and life were adversely affected, she said.
The other plaintiff eventually left school due distress caused by the assault and seeing Green on campus, she said. She was unable to sleep, and was later diagnosed with a sexually transmitted infection she attributed to Green, the complaint said.
The women are seeking a jury trial, economic damages, payment of medical bills, and payment for other losses they say are related to the attacks.
