LOGAN, Utah, Sept. 13, 2021 (Gephardt Daily) — Logan High School was locked down briefly Monday morning after a report of a man with a gun.
A news release from Logan City Police Department says that just after 11 a.m., officers were dispatched to the school at 162 W. 100 South after a call reporting a man with a gun standing in front of the school.
“Multiple officers responded and while en route, were notified the school resource officer was in contact with the male suspect inside the front doorway of the school,” the news release says. “The male did not have a gun in his possession at that time.”
During subsequent investigation, it was determined the man with the gun had confronted two females who were riding bicycles through the parking lot just north of 100 South in front of the school. The man stopped and left the truck he was driving and confronted the females, ages 17 and 19, about stealing one of the bicycles they were riding from his residence a few blocks away, the news release said.
“It was reported he confronted these two with a handgun, which he pointed at them, commanding them to get off the bicycles and get on the ground,” the news release adds. “The females complied, both females reportedly ran away from the male as he placed the bicycle in his truck. The male parked his truck and started to walk towards the school with a backpack one of the females had left behind.”
A person who witnessed the confrontation told the man he couldn’t go into the school with a gun, to which he replied, it wasn’t a gun, it was a cellphone, the news release says. A third party witness said they observed the man with a gun pointed towards the females while they were in the same parking lot as the incident.
Logan High School was placed on lockdown for approximately 10 minutes while officers secured the scene.
During an interview, the man, who has been identified as Kristopher Egbert, 36, of Logan, allegedly admitted he did point a 9mm at the females because they had stolen a bicycle from his residence a short time before then he found them in the parking lot. After he confronted them, he placed the handgun in his truck before he went into the school. The suspect was cooperative with officers, the news release says.
“It was determined the bicycle one female was riding was stolen from Egbert’s residence,” the news release says. “The theft of the bicycle is being investigated as well.”
Egbert was booked into Cache County Jail, where he is facing charges of two counts of aggravated assault, a third-degree felony, and disorderly conduct, a class C misdemeanor.
