CLEARFIELD, Utah, April 29, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — Two men have been arrested following a shooting that injured a third man Sunday afternoon outside a Clearfield apartment complex.
Richard Santiago Tehero, 21, and Austin James Wickham, 24, both of Clearfield, were arrested Sunday night for investigation of third-degree felony discharge of a firearm in connection with a 1:30 p.m. shooting in the parking lot of the Clearfield Plaza Apartments, 530 S. State St.
Wickham told Clearfield police he was in his vehicle with his girlfriend in the parking lot at the apartment complex when a group of men — including Tehero and his brother, Michael Tehero — began walking toward them, according to a probable cause statement filed in Farmington’s 2nd District Court.
Wickham’s girlfriend told police that “multiple males” brandished handguns and pointed them at the couple, and one man began shooting at them, arrest documents say.
The woman, who was in the driver’s seat, told police she “ducked down in the vehicle” and “then put the vehicle in drive so they could leave the area,” according to the affidavit.
While the woman was driving away, police say Wickham produced a handgun and began returning fire in the direction of the group. The couple drove to a nearby business, where they called police, arrest documents say.
Responding officers found “multiple bullet holes” in the vehicle, police said.
Emergency dispatchers also received a call from Richard Tehero and Michael Tehero, who live in separate apartments at the complex, police said.
Richard Tehero told police he had been taking trash to a dumpster in the parking lot near where Wickham and his girlfriend were parked.
“Richard [Tehero] stated when he looked over at [Wickham], he observed [Wickham] brandishing a handgun and pointing it at [him],” the affidavit says. “Richard [Tehero] stated he was carrying his firearm as well and unholstered his weapon.”
Richard Tehero told police he discharged his firearm at Wickham and that Wickham shot at him as the vehicle drove away, according to the probable cause statement.
After Wickham had left the area, Richard Tehero and Michael Tehero returned to Michael’s apartment, according to the affidavit, and “It was reported that two handguns were in the possession of Richard and the firearms were left on a table located inside the apartment.”
Police initially said they were searching for a fourth person, Richard Tehero Sr., 44, who allegedly fled the scene in a black 2017 GMC Sierra.
In an update Monday, Clearfield police said Richard Tehero Sr. sustained a minor foot injury in the incident and is cooperating with the investigation.
