HERRIMAN, Utah, May 30, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — Police have detained four suspects in Wednesday’s fatal stabbing, two injured themselves in the incident that left a 16-year-old boy dead.
Police were dispatched to the scene at about 12:30 p.m. to the area of 14800 S. Beckenbauer Ave. They found the victim in the driver’s seat of a car.
In an update delivered to reporters at the scene just before 6 p.m., Herriman Deputy Police Chief Cody Stromberg said identification of the four led to a Riverton address on Daggerwing Way and a SWAT call out at the residence. But the suspects surrendered peacefully and a lockdown at a nearby elementary school was lifted, he said.
It’s still not known who delivered the fatal stabbing, Stromberg said, but the circumstances leading to the confrontation included both the suspects’ and the victim’s groups attending a nearby high school graduation. It appears no altercation occurred at those ceremonies, he said.
The four suspects — two adult females, one adult male and one juvenile male — have not been arrested, he said, still considered and detained as persons of interest who are cooperating with investigators.
Two were driven by private vehicle to hospitals with non life-threatening injuries from the fatal confrontation, he said.
The two groups are known to each other, and have a history, he said, and the confrontation was not a random act, but a targeted event. “As to the motive, we’re still working that out.”
The identification of the deceased 16-year-old was not released, with notifications still pending.
Stromberg said decisions on arrests and charges will be made in the next few days “now that we know who the players are.”
