SPRINGDALE, Utah, July 5, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — A motorcyclist was killed Thursday in a crash at Zion National Park.

The fatality happened the evening of July 4 in the Zion-Mt. Carmel Tunnel, according to a Friday press release from the National Park Service.

“NPS staff and Hurricane Valley Fire District emergency medical personnel immediately responded to the incident and performed CPR on the patient,” the park service wrote.

“After administering emergency medical care, medical control gave the order to terminate further efforts of resuscitation. The park staff consulted with a doctor (medical control) and the patient was pronounced dead on scene. The patient was a 19-year-old male.

“All of us at Zion National Park extend our sympathy to the deceased’s family for their tragic loss,” said Acting Superintendent Bry Carter.

The Zion-Mt. Carmel Tunnel closed temporarily during emergency response operations and is now open to normal traffic.

The Utah Highway Patrol also responded to the single-vehicle crash and is investigating in collaboration with the park service and Utah Office of the Medical Examiner.
