Nevada corrections officials release names of 2 of 3 prisoners killed Tuesday in prison fight

ELY, Nevada, July 31, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — The Nevada Department of Corrections has released the names of two of three inmates killed in a fight Tuesday at Ely State Prison.

The release of the third victim’s name will come after next-of-kin notification, the department said in a Wednesday news release.

The two inmates confirmed dead are:

  • Zackaria Luz, 42, who was serving seven to 18 years for racketeering. He was sentenced out of Clark County, Nevada, and arrived at Ely State Prison on Oct. 5, 2023.
  • Connor Brown, 22, who was serving seven to 20 years for robbery with the use of a deadly weapon, with a deadly weapon enhancement. He was sentenced in Washoe County, Nevada, and arrived at Ely State Prison on May 13 of 2021.

“Nine offenders were transported for treatment,” the Department of Corrections statement says. “No officers were injured. No further information is available at this time, as it is an active investigation.”

Ely State Prison remains on lockdown after the incident, the Wednesday afternoon statement says.
