LAYTON, Utah, Aug. 22, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) – A man critically wounded after being shot in a confrontation with Layton police officers Wednesday night has died.
Layton Police Lt. Travis Lyman told Gephardt Daily, officers were dispatched to a West Layton home about 9:40 p.m. after a woman called emergency dispatchers and said her husband was “suicidal, distraught and that he had a gun.”
Officers responded and were able to get the wife to come out of the house and down the street to meet them.
Crisis negotiators then made contact with the husband by phone, but he kept disconnecting, Lyman said. “They had periodic contact with him over the next little while, though he made statements that he was going to force a confrontation with the officers.
“Ultimately, he ended up coming out the front door of the house, with at least one gun in his hands, possibly more, and ended up being shot.”
Lyman said Layton officers started life saving measures until medics arrived. The husband was then transported to Holy Cross Davis where he died Thursday morning.
Layton PD invoked the officer-involved critical incident protocol moments after shooting, bringing in an outside agency to investigate the incident.
Lyman said it was too early to determine if the husband opened fire on police or how many Layton officers took part in the actual shooting.
Gephardt Daily will update this story as more information becomes available.
