SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Oct. 5, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — Police investigators are on the scene of a fatal shooting in downtown Salt Lake City.

According to SLCPD spokesperson Brent Weisberg, officers were called to the scene near 200 South State St. at 12:18 p.m. Saturday.

When officers arrived, they found the mortally wounded male victim lying in an alleyway parking lot just north of the Maverik store, where bypassers were already attempting life-saving measures.

While first responders took over the efforts to save the wounded man, officers arrested a male suspect a couple of blocks away near 200 South 300 East.

Weisberg praised not only those who tried to save the victim, who ultimately died at the scene, he also thanked a citizen who followed the alleged shooter and provided police dispatchers with the suspect’s location.

The specific circumstances of the shooting are unknown, although witnesses told police the victim and suspect were fighting near the entrance of the Maverik store when multiple shots were fired.

Investigators believe the shooting was an isolated incident and there is no threat to the public, including those attending the LDS church’s General Conference, which is being held nearby.

“The SLCPD Homicide Squad will work with the medical examiner’s office to confirm the man’s name, age, cause of death and to notify next-of-kin,” Weisberg said.

Anyone who has information about this shooting, including photos and video, and who has not already talked to police is urged to call 801-799-3000.
