Man dead after major fall in Zion National Park

ZION NATIONAL PARK, Utah, Oct. 6, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — A man who was canyoneering at Zion National Park Saturday died after an accidental fall near Heaps Canyon.

The incident was reported at about 6 p.m. The distance of the fall has been estimated at 200 feet.

A statement from Zion National Park says after the fall was reported, “Zion National Park Technical Search and Rescue Team and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office arrived on scene and rendered emergency medical care.

“The patient was extracted by a Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter to nearby Watchman Campground, where he received additional aid from Hurricane Valley Fire & Rescue and Intermountain Life Flight.

“He was pronounced dead before he could be transported by air ambulance to a hospital.”

The name of the deceased will be withheld until his next of kin have been notified, the park statement says.
