OGDEN, Utah, Oct. 21, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — A 28-year-old man was arrested early Sunday morning after a fight in an Ogden homeless shelter.

Ogden City police found the victim with a significant leg injury and an open wound on his head.

“Officers located a metal time (the removed long, metal handlebars of a bicycle) near the victim,” says an affidavit filed in the arrest of Justin Daniel Peterson.

“A witness stated that the suspect had hit the victim several times with the pipe. I reviewed video footage showing a figure striking the male several times with the metal bar, then picking up a bike and hitting him in the back of the head with it.”

The victim was transported to an area hospital and assessed by medical staff.

“I was advised the victim suffered a shattered tibia (shin bone), and will need to wear a leg cast long term,” the arrest document says. “The victim also had a significant laceration to his head, and needed several staples to close the wound.”

The suspect, Justin Daniel Peterson, had fled the scene earlier, but returned while officers were still on the scene.

Post Miranda, Peterson ” told officer Olivas he was being verbally attacked by the victim, so he had attacked him. Justin admitted he had hit the victim with the handle bars and with the bike.”

Peterson was booked into the Weber County jail for investigation of aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury, a second-degree felony. He was ordered held without bail.
