WASHINGTON, Utah, Oct. 30, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — The driver of a Mini Cooper died after police say he turned in front of a garbage truck, causing a T-bone collision in which he sustained critical injuries.
The incident happened at about 9:40 a.m. Tuesday in Washington at the intersection of Washington Fields and Merrill roads.
The man, whose name has not been released, died after being transported to a hospital, a statement from the Washington City Police Department says.
“Statements from other drivers and witnesses indicated that the Mini Cooper was traveling eastbound on Merrill Road and failed to yield the right of way to traffic on Washington Fields Road,” the WCPD statement says.
“The garbage truck was southbound on Washington Fields Road when the Mini Cooper entered the intersection, resulting in a T-bone collision.”
Life-saving efforts were attempted at the scene on the man, believed to be a Washington County resident.
The intersection was closed for several hours while the accident reconstruction team conducted its initial investigation.
“The Washington City Police Department extends its heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the victim of this tragic accident,” the police statement says.
“We also want to thank all those who assisted at the scene, including the Washington City Fire Department, Washington City Streets Department, St. George City Police Department, Washington County Sheriff‘s Office, Hurricane City Police Department, Utah Highway Patrol, Gold Cross Ambulances, and the citizens present.”
