WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah, Nov. 29, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — A 23-year-old motorist suffered devastating injuries Thanksgiving night after being struck by an 80-year-old driver as he stood near the back of his disabled vehicle at 1300 West 3300 South.

According to a spokesperson for West Valley City PD, the man was standing in the dark about 10:21 p.m., attempting to repair his vehicle’s electrical system, when the accident happened. Due to the failure of the electrical system, the vehicle’s hazard lights were inoperative.

When officers arrived, they found the 23-year-old lying in the roadway with one leg amputated and the other severely damaged. He was taken by ambulance to an undisclosed hospital, where he was advised that he would survive, but would lose both of his legs.

The 80-year-old woman, who police say hit the 23-year-old, sustained minor injuries. She allegedly told arriving officers she did not see the male or the vehicle before the collision.

It was unclear if charges will be filed in the case.

Gephardt Daily will update the story as more information becomes available.
