SALT LAKE COUNTY, Utah, April 11, 2026 (Gephardt Daily) — A motorcyclist was arrested Thursday night following a brief pursuit on Interstate 15 and a crash involving a Herriman City police vehicle.
The incident began at approximately 8:45 p.m., when a UHP trooper traveling northbound on I-15 near 8000 South observed two motorcycles, including one dark-colored bike without a license plate, weaving through traffic at a high rate of speed and failing to signal, according to a Utah Department of Public Safety press release and a probable cause statement filed by a Utah Highway Patrol trooper.
A traffic stop was initiated, but the rider of the motorcycle fled, accelerating after the trooper activated lights and sirens. A pursuit was started but later terminated near 7200 South on northbound I-15, according to probable cause statement.
Authorities said visual contact with the motorcycle was maintained through cameras and the DPS helicopter.

The rider initially tried to stop and refuel at a gas station near 11400 South, but fled again when officers moved in to make an arrest.
The DPS Aero Bureau later coordinated with ground units after the rider stopped at a Holiday gas station at 15027 S. Academy Parkway.
During the apprehension at the gas station, the suspect struck a Herriman City patrol vehicle while attempting to evade officers before being taken into custody, DPS said.
The suspect was identified as Colton Hymas. He was not injured in the incident.
After being advised of his Miranda rights, Hymas acknowledged fleeing from law enforcement and told officers the motorcycle was uninsured, the affidavit states.
Authorities said Hymas also had an active felony no-bail warrant, and the motorcycle he was operating is believed to be stolen.
Hymas was booked on the following charges:
- Failure to stop or respond at command of police, a third-degree felony
- Reckless driving, a class B misdemeanor
- Driving on a suspended or revoked license, a class C misdemeanor
- Operating a vehicle without insurance, a class C misdemeanor
- Motorcycle license plate violation (improper display), an infraction
- Purchase/possession of tobacco or e-cigarette products by a person age 18 to 20, an infraction
The incident remains under investigation.
