June 3 (UPI) — Peabo Bryson, a singer-songwriter whose hits included the Disney classics “Beauty and the Beast” and “A Whole New World,” has died.

The music artist died Tuesday evening “surrounded by the love of his family and those closest to him,” according to a statement from his family obtained by CNN. He was 75.

NPR confirmed the news.

“While our hearts are broken, we find comfort in knowing how deeply Peabo was loved and how many lives were touched by his voice and his generous spirit,” the family said. “His legacy and music will love on for generations to come.”

Bryson joined Celine Dion for “Beauty and the Beast,” the title song from Disney’s 1991 animated feature, and Regina Belle for “A Whole New World” from the 1992 film Aladdin.

He was also known for the R&B hits “Feel the Fire” and “Can You Stop the Rain.”

News of Bryson’s death comes days after his family announced the Grammy-winning singer had suffered a stroke.
