HOLLYWOOD, Calif., Jan. 7, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” needed just 20 days to pass the $760.5 million grossed by 2009’s “Avatar,” which still holds the worldwide box office record of $2.78 billion.
However, when the numbers are recalculated and adjusted for inflation, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” becomes the 21st-highest grossing film in history.
“Gone With the Wind,” from 1939, remains the all-time box-office champion with more than $1.7 billion domestically in today’s dollars.
The original 1977 “Star Wars” ranks in second place with around $1.5 billion, including re-releases.
