PAYSON, Utah, Dec. 6, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — One man is dead, and a second in critical condition after a late night accident in Payson.

Sgt. Christian Elias with Payson P.D. told Gephardt Daily the crash happened just before midnight when the vehicle the men were in struck a power pole at 814 S. Main Street.

Elias said the victims, both 23 years old, had just left work prior to the crash.

One victim was from Payson, the other from Santaquin.

According to Elias, the men were rushed to an area hospital where the driver succumbed to injuries. The passenger was also severely injured, but is expected to survive.

Elias said crash scene investigators believe the cause of the accident was a combination of excessive speed and reckless driving. He said impairment did not appear to be a factor, nor did road conditions.

The victims’ names have yet to be released pending notification of family members.

Gephardt Daily will update the story as more information becomes available.
