WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah, Dec. 1, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Police in West Valley City are investigating a fatal accident at the intersection of 5400 South and U-111 Saturday.

West Valley City Police Sgt. John Pittman told Gephardt Daily dispatchers were first called about 8:50 a.m.

When officers arrived they found a car and a pickup truck had collided after one of the vehicles appeared to have run a traffic light.

The car rolled and trapped the driver inside.

“The person passed away before we were able to get them from the car,” Pittman said. “LifeFlight had landed and was standing by.”

The victim has been identified as 19-year-old Holly Nichols.

The driver of the pickup suffered only minor injuries.

Both drivers were alone in their vehicles, “so we’re glad we don’t have anyone else hurt,” Pittman said.

The roads were slick from a Friday night snowstorm, but Pittman said it was unknown if weather was a contributing factor. The investigation is ongoing, he said.

UDOT workers were called to the scene, where they removed ice from the traffic lights.

At 10 a.m., witnesses were still being interviewed and the scene was still being examined and measured to determine what happened. Pittman said the road would be closed for several hours, and drivers would be diverted to 4700 South.
