SANDY, Utah, Dec. 2, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — One of the three people hit Thursday night near the South Towne Expo Center has died, police said.
Stephanie Burton, 46, died Saturday as a result of injuries suffered in the auto-pedestrian collision, according to a Sandy Police Department news release from Lt. Jon Arnold.
Two other adults who were hit in the crosswalk, a man and a woman, have been released from the hospital and are recovering at home, according to police.
The 17-year-old male driver who hit the pedestrians suffered minor injuries.
Lt. Dean Carriger of the Sandy Police Department told Gephardt Daily on Thursday that at about 7:15 p.m., the pedestrians were crossing 9400 South at approximately 80 East to go to the Festival of Trees, which was at the Expo Center.
The male teen was driving a red Mitsubishi westbound on 9400 South, Carriger said, approaching a signal-controlled crosswalk.
“The signal had cycled to allow pedestrians to cross the street, we had three adult pedestrians, one male, two females, enter the roadway crossing from the north side of the street to the south side,” he said.
“The 17-year-old driver failed to stop and struck all three pedestrians. As a result of the impact, the three pedestrians sustained critical injuries and were transported to Intermountain Medical Center in Murray for treatment.”
Carriger said the pedestrians ranged in age from mid-40s to early-60s.
Witnesses reported at the scene that the driver had a red light, and the pedestrians had a green signal to cross.
