SANTAQUIN, Utah, Aug. 22, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — A 5-year-old boy who found his father’s gun accidentally shot himself fatally Thursday afternoon, police said.
“So obviously there’s still some investigation going on about how everything happened exactly, but what we do know is at 2:19 p.m. we responded to a young boy with a single gunshot wound,” Santaquin Police Lt. Mike Wall said.
Officers and Santaquin EMS responders attempted life-saving efforts, which were unsuccessful, he said, and the boy was pronounced dead at the scene.
“We do know that the 5-year-old was able to find Dad’s handgun and somehow it was discharged or went off and he received one single gunshot wound,” Wall told Gephardt Daily.
“We obviously are going to look more into how the gun went off, some of the things like that, try to get a little bit more information,” Wall said. “But that’s still part of the investigation.”
