SEVIER COUNTY, Utah, May 6, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Eight people were transported to the hospital and two of them were then flown by medical helicopters to trauma centers after an accident Sunday on State Route 24.

The accident happened at about 10:30 a.m. when a pickup truck was pulling a fifth-wheel trailer loaded with hay bales, the Utah Highway Patrol said in a news release.

The hay was not properly secured to the trailer, and at milepost 19, near Sigurd, the load began to shift, causing the trailer to tip.

When the trailer tipped and rolled, it hit two southbound vehicles, each with four occupants. All eight occupants were injured.

They were taken by ambulance to Sevier Valley Hospital, and two of the most severely injured people were later flown to trauma centers, UHP said.

The road was closed while medical personnel treated and transported the patients and as the trailer was removed.

“UHP would remind all drivers to properly secure all cargo being transported. It will never hurt to add an additional strap, tarp, or rope to be 100 percent certain the load will not shift or fall from the vehicle,” the news release said.

“For those who travel the area, the hay which has been scattered along the shoulder may attract feeding wildlife, such as deer or elk, until it is gone. Please use caution when traveling through the area.”
